Waiting to Chill

Took this one a while back. This tree is in front of one of the entrances to the State Department. I love the shape of it and the way it catches the light from the streetlamp below.

The trees are currently nowhere near bare here right now. In fact, most of them are still very much green, and only a few species are dropping leaves here and there. It doesn’t feel like autumn in the D.C. area until about the first week of November. In fact, much to my dismay, temperatures are expected to climb into the 80s at the end of the week, with a high of 86 on Friday.

I’m somewhat used to changeable weather in this area. Back in the ’90s, sometimes I wore velvet and full winter gear to New Year’s Eve parties and sometimes I wore off-the-shoulder dresses with nothing more than a shawl. However, since returning to the area from Long Island in 2015, I’ve seen temperatures get into the low 90s in October and that’s not how it used to be 30 years ago. We’d have an Indian summer in late September, but by mid-October it was definitely jean-jacket weather and you could anticipate not seeing shorts weather again until early May.

Climate change is a thing, kids. It’s one of the real-life horrors we face.
