Sunday Stealing: December 4, 2022

Time for a little Sunday Stealing.

1. What do men really want in a woman?
Depends on the man, and you’d have to ask him.

2. Should marijuana be legalized?
For medical purposes only. I used to be pro-legalization all the way, but not anymore. I’ve been writing about substance use disorders for a living for four years now, and after reading dozens of studies about the harms of cannabis, I no longer believe it should be a legal free-for-all for recreational use. Don’t get me wrong: I don’t believe we should throw people in jail for smoking a joint, so I guess you could say I believe in decriminalization. But I don’t believe it should be something people can just buy because they feel like it, like they buy a pack of cigarettes or a six-pack.

I also think cannabis-derived products should be tightly regulated as a drug and only available for evidence-based treatments, which right now would be only for epilepsy, and for treating nausea caused by chemotherapy. I won’t start a crap-storm in this blog, but a study just came out about how the perceived reduction in pain in people who use cannabis for pain management is largely placebo effect caused in part by skewed coverage in the media. There is also evidence that cannabis makes anxiety worse, not better, in that if you stop using it, your anxiety comes roaring back worse than before. It has to do with the cannabinoid receptors on your cells.

And honestly? Smoking the stuff pollutes the air around you and it STINKS. Various parts of Washington, D.C. smell like the back-end of a skunk, notably the Wharf, various parks, and half of the Metro. PEOPLE, if you smoke weed, please know that you smell, and quite possibly reek. There is no delicate way of putting this and there is no escaping it. It gets in your clothes and your hair and people can smell you 10, 15 feet away. You may be nose-blind to it the way people are often nose-blind to their own body odor or the perfume or aftershave they use, but lemme tellya, the rest of the world isn’t. If people around you start whipping out their masks, it means you stink. There, I said it, I own it, moving on…

3. Why did the cow jump over the moon?
To get to the other side.

4. What do women really want in a man?
It depends on the woman, and you’d have to ask her.

5. When you are having a really good day, what usually makes it good?
Socializing with people who have the same sense of humor and then coming home to this handsome guy:

6. What can make your good day turn into a bad day?
Metro delays and other rat-race problems.

7. If you could “start from scratch” and turn back the clock for a re-do, what would you re-do?
From scratch? I probably would have become a physician.

8. Do you make a list when you go grocery shopping?
Usually.

9. Do you buy more groceries when you’re hungry?
Yes, so I don’t go grocery-shopping when I’m hungry.

10. Coupons. Use ’em?
Sometimes.

11. Have you ever complained to the manager of your grocery store?
No, but I have brought to customer service expired items that I find on the shelves.

12. Do you like to buy groceries at huge chain stores like WalMart? Or do you shop exclusively at food stores?
Food stores, namely Giant and Harris Teeter, sometimes Safeway, sometimes Whole Foods, but I haven’t really shopped at Whole Foods since I moved to where I live now.

13. What do you typically have for lunch?
Salad, a Tofurky sandwich with vegan cheese and vegan mayo, California roll, or falafel.

14. If you work outside your home, do you pack your lunch?
Not anymore. I have to lug my laptop to the office on days I go in, and it’s all too much to carry. But I only go in twice a week.

15. Tell us about your last lunch date and what made it special.
I had lunch with a buddy a few weeks ago. We had a reservation for a place neither of us had been to before, which was on the second and third floors of a commons. We were seated outside and didn’t realize we were in the wrong place until the server came over and introduced herself. It all worked out though: We had a leisurely ladies’ lunch with good conversation and that place had the BEST vegan double-cheeseburger I have ever had.

Well, that was fun, especially because there are so many questions about grocery-shopping after a question about cannabis. Did someone have the munchies?
